How to Start a Digital Detox: First Steps and My Own Practices

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by your smartphone or social media? The constant presence of your phone and the endless temptation to check social media or apps can lead to information overload without you even realizing it. That’s where digital detox comes in.
In this article, I’ll share the first steps to starting a digital detox and some of the specific methods I’ve been using myself.
What is Digital Detox?
A digital detox is the practice of intentionally stepping away from smartphones, computers, and social media to refresh your mind and body. By distancing yourself from digital devices, you can reset your focus, improve your mood, and regain a sense of calm.
First Steps to Start a Digital Detox
1. Simplify Your Phone’s Home Screen
Start by decluttering your phone’s home screen. Simply removing apps you don’t use and social media apps that tempt you can greatly reduce the number of times you reach for your phone, and naturally reduce your screen time.
Reducing Apps on Your Phone
I personally removed all social media apps from my home screen and moved unused apps into separate folders. This small change significantly reduced the times I found myself mindlessly opening social media.
2. Delete Social Media Apps and Check via Browser
Next, consider deleting your social media apps altogether. You can still access them via a browser if necessary, but removing the convenience of app access can dramatically reduce the time you spend on social media.
Checking Social Media in the Browser Only Occasionally
I’ve deleted social media apps and now log in via a browser only when needed. The extra steps make me less likely to check them frequently, which has freed up a lot of time for other activities.
3. Keep a Handwritten Journal
To create more distance from your phone, try incorporating analog activities into your routine. For example, keeping a handwritten journal allows you to unplug from the digital world and provides a time to clear your head.
Writing a Handwritten Journal
I keep a journal where I write about recent events and my thoughts every morning. This simple habit of writing by hand helps me feel calmer and more organized.
4. Use an iPod or e-Reader
Listening to music on your smartphone can often lead to distractions from other apps. A great way to avoid this is by using alternative devices like an iPod or e-reader for music and reading.

Using Different Tools for Different Purposes
Switching to my iPod for music has eliminated unnecessary distractions from social media and notifications. Additionally, using an e-reader helps me fully focus on reading, providing time away from my phone.
How I Felt After Starting a Digital Detox
At first, I felt a little anxious without my phone, and it was hard to get used to not having it around all the time. But slowly, as I distanced myself from digital devices, I noticed I had more mental space and time to focus on analog hobbies and journaling. My concentration improved, and I found myself enjoying life more without the constant pull of my phone.
The beauty of digital detox is that you can start at your own pace, making small changes to fit your lifestyle. Begin with a few simple steps, and see how it feels!
